OUR PAST IS OUR FUTURE
YOU: Have you eaten at the Main Street Deli?
ME: Many times.
ME: Excellent. There are a variety of selections.
YOU: What is your favorite dish?
ME: I like their spaghetti and meatballs.
YOU: Is the food expensive?
ME: I wouldn't say it's as cheap as a greasy downtown Mexican restaurant, but portions are ample and in my opinion worth the cost.
YOU: Do you usually go for lunch or dinner?
ME: I usually go for a late lunch after the rush has ended.
YOU: How would you describe the ambience?
ME: I'll let Hemingway express my sentiments: "It's a clean, well-lighted place."
YOU: Do they serve alcohol? I relish a glass of wine with my lunches and dinners.
ME: I don't believe so, but you can order a fresh scoop of ice cream after your meal.
YOU: It's on Market Square, right?
ME: You can eat outside on the plaza, but the weather has been conducive for open-air dining. Located on the corner of 12th and Washington, you find yourself in the heart of historical Brownsville.
YOU: I'm impressed by all the bars, clubs and restaurants that are opening and it's the younger generation that is leading the way in reclaiming our architecturally rich and aesthetically pleasing downtown.
ME: The momentum is only growing. We need to reclaim our 19th century title as the New Orleans of the Rio Grande and both our leaders and citizens must commit themselves to turning downtown into a French Quarter. We have a gold mine. We just need to polish the nuggets. I've always said: "Our past is our future."
