IGNORANCE BREEDS INTELLIGENCE

I have intimate ties with the five most ignorant cities in the United States. Brownsville ranks number two and McAllen number three. They keep the Rio Grande Valley on the map. Visalia, Bakersfield and Modesto, California, are one, four and five and comprise a prominent part of the larger San Joaquin Valley.

Of course, I know all these communities since they are a part of my life in every conceivable way. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for these tarred-and-feathered towns, particularly Modesto and Brownsville. My children and wives have been products of the latter.

Were picking spouses and having kids bad decisions as a result of being raised under such trying circumstances if the study has merit? And who am I to argue? As a longtime coach, I never dispute the numbers. At the end of the contest, they are the final word.

I graduated from grammar school, high school and college in Modesto. When I was 24, after a long journey in Mexico, I arrived in Brownsville in 1975 and started teaching at Hanna High School. I also took classes at TSC, Pan Am and UTB. I remained in the BISD for nearly four decades. I guess you could say, based on the stats, I am part stupid and part pendejo.

Both regions also lead the nation in poverty. Needless to say, we are not a pretentious lot.

Why didn't my existence begin in New York City and lead me to Miami to escape the cold? I could have been a somebody surrounded by intelligent and wealthy individuals who would have been the role models inspiring me to higher achievements. Sadly, between white trash and barrio basura, I have picked the low-hanging fruit and have never realized my potential.

Or how about Madrid in my youth and Paris in adulthood? Like the brilliant Melania Trump, I would speak several languages and maybe I could have convinced a multi-millionaire widow with my athletic body from being a standout football, basketball and baseball player that everyone deserves a second chance.

If the truth be known, I have no regrets about my upbringing. Modesto and Brownsville, with all their beautiful people and the enlightening Hispanic culture, have more than exceeded my highest expectations. I would have no qualms sticking to the same script in an encore.

As Forrest Gump would say: "That's all I have to say about that!"
