CHLOE
My youngest son Michael is heartbroken. Chloe, his best friend since he was a child, will be put under today. He informed me of the bad news yesterday from his apartment in San Marcos where he attends Texas State.
Chloe is with his mother in San Antonio and Michael was going to drive down this morning to attend the procedure.
As we parents know, as much as our children suffer, we suffer at least as much. Nothing fills us with sadness quite like our children's pain.
I have never been a pet lover. I have never shared my space with dogs and cats. You won't find a parakeet in a cage or fish in a bowl in my apartment. I don't have an innate love for them and I find them to be a complete inconvenience.
"If I'm going to have an animal in my house, I'm going to have children," I have told my friends on countless occasions, I've raised six kids, four of my own and two of Michael's mother. I have no doubts that she is as grief stricken as our son.
I sent him this message earlier:
"I know today will be one of the most painful days of your life. Chloe has had a good life. She will go straight to dog heaven. She brought much joy into your life.
"Death, sadly, is a brutal reality. We have to accept it because there is no other option although this is easier said than done.
"You will be in my thoughts all day. You know how much Pops love his baby boy. Give free reign to your emotions and then be strong.
"Give thanks to Chloe who made you a better person and who will always exist in your heart as long as you live. She is forever a part of your spirit.
"A big hug, papacito."
